It’s that time of year again … Valentine’s Day: the holiday that places pressure on both singles and couples. It is the day where your social media feed will be flooded with couples and the way they are celebrating it. While it may be a romantic holiday for some, it can be awkward for those who have never experienced it.

Every year, I have always found it awkward for people to be spending the day with their significant other. Every year, I celebrate how many years I’ve been single. If you’re single, Valentine’s Day isn’t specifically for couples, it can be your way of celebrating you. With that being said, here are some things you can do today to celebrate :

Take a Social Media Break:

Make Valentine’s Day a social media free day. Seeing the many people post their celebrations with their significant others isn’t going to make you feel happy or couple photos on your newsfeed. Go on a walk, buy a new book, or find time to focus on yourself.

Have the Ultimate Movie Marathon:

Being able to pick out your favorite movies and watching them from your couch is the best part of this idea. I personally recommend watching Rush Hour 2, which is filled with comedy, action and adventure. An alternative could be going to the movie theater and watching the latest film that you’ve been waiting to see.

Throw an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party:

Just because you’re single doesn’t mean you can’t throw a party. It can be a party for those who just can’t deal with dating, love and romance. Throw an epic party with your single friends and celebrate your independence. Include music that sets the tone of singlehood. Here’s a good playlist as a starting point:

Embrace your Laziness:

If you find yourself under pressure on what to do for Valentine’s Day, you can consider this your day to just be lazy. Put on your PJs, order some food and cue up some of your favorite shows. If you have HBO Max, watch some Euphoria.

Self-Care!:

Self-care is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Make this a day centered around you and your health. Get a new hairstyle, practice a new hobby, or journal how you’re feeling. If you are interested in meditation, Calm is an excellent way to get started with self-meditation exercises.

Even without a significant other, there is still a lot you can do on Valentine’s Day. From watching your favorite movies to practicing self-care, there are a lot of options to choose from. You can make this Valentine’s Day one you’ll never forget.
