Michigan State associate director of student leadership and involvement office of Spartan experiences Taymme Coles worked throughout the fall 2021 semester to plan an event known as the "Spartan Glow and Flow."

This event was originally intended to take place during the spring 2022 semester’s first week but was postponed after concerns from COVID-19's Omicron variant led to a moratorium on in-person classes, as well as many extracurricular activities, at MSU.

Despite this postponement, however, Coles is optimistic that the event will go on as planned later in the semester.

“We promised we’d bring it back, so our hope is to host it later on in the spring; maybe in March, or maybe even in April, but we do still plan to host the event” Coles said.

"Spartan Glow and Flow" was intended to be an early semester engagement event to welcome students back to campus and keep morale across campus high going into the winter semester.

“At the beginning of the year, there's this robust schedule, there's lots of things to do, and even during the fall semester, but when we go to spring semester, the robustness slows down a little bit," Coles said. "Not really bad, but we didn’t have an engagement signature event that we host at the beginning of the year.”

The purpose of this event, Coles said, is to provide both a fun social event for students and an environment to learn about valuable resources for their success and health.

The event will host several glow-in-the-dark-themed activities, including a roller-rink, glow-in-the-dark sports and a 70s theme party hosted by MSU's student radio station Impact 89 FM, while also featuring flyers with QR codes allowing students to easily access valuable campus resources.

“With the event, we wanted to provide students with some information about programs that could help them be successful during the semester ... We’re gonna give information about the library, about mental health things that they could do.” Coles said.

“We wanted to try to just be like a repository of information.” she continued.

While the event is still seeking funding, financial contributions from the Associated Students of Michigan State University, as well as from different academic departments and other sponsors across the university, Coles said she feels confident that the event will meet its financial needs without further fundraising efforts.

“A lot of the folks across campus can’t necessarily afford to pull an event off like this monetarily, but they can contribute to having us pull off the entire thing. So we anticipate that we won’t have any huge burden to try and get this funding ... We don’t anticipate that being an Achilles Heel,” she said.
