Coach Suzy Merchant yells at the team during the third quarter. The Spartans beat the Fighting Illini, 75-60, in their Big Ten opener on Dec. 9, 2021.

MSU women’s basketball Head Coach Suzy Merchant will not be able to coach for the Spartans in today’s game against Northwestern due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, according to a statement made via social media from the team.

Merchant will also not be available for their game at Indiana on Wednesday. Taking her place in the meantime will be Associate Head Coach Dean Lockwood.

The Spartans along with many other NCAA teams have struggled to contain COVID-19 outbreaks in the midst of the latest COVID-19 surge in Michigan. Although it is unclear at this time if any other staff or players are affected, this marks the second outbreak of the season for the Spartans. The last outbreak happened Dec. 30, 2021, against Nebraska when MSU only had nine players available.

The Spartans are set to take on Northwestern later today at 2 p.m.
