A bill that outlined a plan for female and nonbinary gym spaces in MSU recreational facilities has been tabled by the ASMSU academic committee.

ASMSU General Assembly Representative and education junior Ella Woehlke drafted the bill. She said the bill was tabled yesterday in order to make the idea as inclusive as possible.

The bill introduced a way to create a safer workout space for female and nonbinary students. It was inspired by the shared experiences of female and nonbinary students who say they have had uncomfortable encounters in MSU gyms.

MSU has plans to construct a new recreational facility. The bill was introduced with the intention of potentially creating this workout space in the new facility.

Creating a separate workout space is not completely off the table. The bill is going to be revised in order to make it more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community. It can be reintroduced to ASMSU committees once changes are made.

“I am working with other representatives to polish the bill to make it the best it can be, and promote health and wellness for as many people as possible,” Woehlke said.
