This year, Michigan State University held its first ever fall break. This break gave students Monday and Tuesday off from classes to start the week of October 24.

The State News conducted a questionnaire for students of the university so we could find out how beneficial this break was for them.

The survey received 121 responses from freshman students to seniors at MSU. The survey found that 91.7 percent of students enjoyed their fall break.

“I enjoyed it, I went up to Traverse City with my grandparents and then I went home Sunday and stayed there until Wednesday,” computer science sophomore Luke Kelly said.

Even though a large amount of students enjoyed the break, 79 percent of students still had to catch up on assignments during the break.

“During the week I tried to set aside time when I could do it during fall break so I kind of just did it then,” said special education senior Marlese Gilliam when asked if she still had to do homework over the break.

Others expressed concerns with the timing of the break due to it being around the time when midterms are due and the fact that it fell on a Monday and Tuesday and not a Thursday and Friday.

The university wanted to prioritize the mental health of students and so they gave these two days off, and most agreed that the break improved their well-being.

“I would say yes just because it was nice to get off campus and have a break from the school just to relax,” finance freshman Owen Vanderweele said when asked if fall break was beneficial to his mental health.

Overall, there are some reported issues with fall break, but the majority of the survey shows that most students enjoyed the time off from classes.
