Michigan State University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. and Chief Diversity Officer Jabbar Bennett reminded students of the required Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or DEI, Foundations online course via email Tuesday.
The module, which joined the Relationship Violence & Sexual Misconduct, or RVSM, courses students are already required to take, aims to help establish a “culture of inclusion among all Spartans at MSU.” The training was first implemented last year.
Students who are required to take the course will be informed by email notification, according to Stanley and Bennett. A refresher course for those who have already taken the module is currently not planned.
Aside from the mandated course, Stanley and Bennett emphasized that the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives is offering a variety of workshops, seminars and programs to support learning around bias, DEI language and inclusive community building.
“MSU aspires to achieve inclusive excellence that supports respect and accountability,” Stanley and Bennett wrote. “You deserve a university that affirms everyone’s presence and DEI Foundations is a vital element toward that imperative.”
Editor's note: This article was updated to clarify that this training was implemented during the 2021-2022 school year.
