Rep. James E. Clyburn, D-South Carolina, is coming to East Lansing to speak at a public service forum at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Wharton Center.

The forum will be hosted by former Gov. Jim Blanchard, who served as the governor of Michigan from 1983-1991.

Both have had lifelong careers in public service. Before his tenure as governor, Blanchard served in the House of Representatives and after, served as the Ambassador to Canada. Clyburn, who was originally elected to Congress in 1993, currently serves as the Majority Whip and is the third highest-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Before he was elected to Congress, Clyburn helped to organize many civil rights demonstrations and was elected president of his NAACP youth chapter when he was only 12 years old.

In 2020, he endorsed Joe Biden in the South Carolina presidential primary election, which many believe was the deciding factor in Biden’s win and his eventual Democratic nomination.

Since then, the American political climate has remained divided on many core issues. These issues, and more, are sure to be discussed by Clyburn at the public forum.

The event is open to the public and tickets are on sale now. Public tickets are $25 and MSU student tickets are $5.
