MSU will host the Green and White Volleyball Classic this weekend, hosting Oakland University, IUPUI and Central Michigan.

The Spartans will be playing in their last non-conference weekend with a record of 4-2 so far this season.

The team has had standout performances across the court with multiple Big Ten and nationwide leaders including Senior Naya Gros, who leads the nation in blocks. Senior Rebecka Poljan is also third in the nation with an overall .500 hitting percentage.

“I think our game is solidifying, our ball control is really getting there to where it needs to be,” Michigan State Head Coach Cathy George said during a press conference. “We’re seeing that we’ve been going forward.

This weekend will also bring forward a friendly rivalry as Central Michigan University’s Head Coach Mike Gawlik, who was previously an assistant volleyball coach at MSU for 11 years.

Gawlik and George worked together for 11 years, bringing MSU to the NCAA Tournament in nine out of those 11 years, along with three visits to the Sweet 16.

“It’ll be kind of cool to see him come back, and he’s bringing my niece with him and setting for him,” George said. “So we’ll see that … a little family showdown.”

MSU will take on the Oakland Grizzlies Friday at 7 p.m., followed by IUPUI and the Chippewas on Saturday at 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m., respectively.

This will be the Spartans' first game since missing last weekend's set of games against North Carolina and Duke due to health and safety protocols.

“Looking forward to get back at it and we look forward to having people in the stands,” George said. “I can’t tell you after not having people out there, what it feels like.”
