Management freshman Gabe Karamanian said, “I’m interested in rushing because I want to get to know as many people as I can, my dad and my mom were in a fraternity and sorority, and I thought that it’s a good way to know people and have a good time.”

For some, they’re freshmen on campus and want a community of friendships while others are looking to join Greek life for academic reasons.

“I’m a finance major, there’s also like the business frats so those generally also help with like connections outside of school,” freshman Achint Eswar said. 

At MSU there are four different councils that oversee Greek life at MSU: the Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Multicultural Greek Council and the Panhellenic Council.

Students look forward to the various councils that divide the Greek life fraternities or sororities for different interests. Masters student Kaitlyn Garcia is looking forward to potentially joining a Latina-based professional sorority. 

“I’m actually interested more in the multicultural ones especially because I see that they do volunteer more and focus on academics and as well as raise money … so I really thought that was interesting and different,” Garcia said.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still continuing and protocols being put in place by MSU for the fall semester, not many students are worried about the possibility of being infected.

“I didn’t have any hesitations obviously COVID played a part in people last year,” Karamanian said. “So, I think we got pretty lucky, and for us this year and being able to do what we’re doing now — I’m excited.”

Garcia felt hesitations first as well but saw the sororities take necessary precautions that eased her worries for the upcoming semester.

After Greek Fall Welcome, students are now more informed and will be keeping up with Greek life’s social media to get more information for preparing to rush this fall semester. Many are looking forward to meeting new people and forever friends, one of the biggest reasons students join Greek life.

“Just being exposed to new people compared to just like my small-town high school, I didn’t really get to branch out or anything so I feel like this could be a place to do it,” interior design freshman Julia Stein said.

Overall, Greek life’s biggest impact at MSU is the long-lasting relationships between the brothers and sisters, what the majority of students are looking for at such a big university.

“The sisterhood that you get when you join -  because it seems like when everybody like gets together they have a good time with each other," human biology sophomore Paige Carter said.
