East Lansing Police Chief Kim Johnson is beginning a "Coffee with the Chief" series for the remainder of the summer in an effort to increase the police department’s community outreach.

The series will include three informal meetings at various locations in East Lansing between Johnson and members of the public. The chats will have a quick update on what East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, is doing.

A Q&A session will follow, where members of the public can ask questions about any topic related to the police department.

“The basic foundation of community-oriented policing is establishing positive relationships with community members,” Johnson said in the press release. “My hope is that these coffee chats will help to enhance our ongoing community outreach efforts and establish mutually beneficial relationships between the police department and the community members we serve.”

The first "Coffee with the Chief" meeting will be held at Grand Traverse Pie Company on E. Grand River Ave. on July 15 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The other two meetings will take place in August and September.

ELPD said in the press release, there is a possibility to add more meetings and have plans to continue the series into the fall.
