In order to help promote East Lansing business, the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has launched a TikTok challenge. This challenge is a part of the “Daytime. Nighttime. Anytime. Place Project,” according to a Jan. 25 release.

Within the TikTok challenge, contestants are supposed to film themselves doing a dance in front of a downtown East Lansing business or landmark. The choreographed dance is part of the first portion of the video, and the second portion consists of contestants improvising.

People who would like to take part need to upload their video onto TikTok and use the hashtag “#downtownELTikTokChallenge” and “#placeproject” by Saturday, Feb. 13 to participate in the challenge. The winner will get a $200 downtown East Lansing e-gift card from the DDA.

“East Lansing is widely recognized as a community that celebrates all forms of artistic expression," DDA Chair Peter Dewan said. "Whether it be our festivals, concerts or hosting forums of nationally-renown authors and speakers, East Lansing’s celebration of the arts is at the core of what makes our community strong and unique. The TikTok Challenge is another way to support and strengthen downtown East Lansing and I look forward to seeing many creative entries.”

The TikTok dance that was choreographed by MSU Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Choreography Brad Willcuts and performed by MSU student Jaylin Alexis Cole is available to view on the downtown East Lansing TikTok page

Participants are required to wear a face mask over their mouth and nose in all public spaces in the DDA district. This is mandatory both inside businesses and outside in public areas (sidewalks, streets, plazas, etc.).
