Junior college product and new MSU commit, offensive lineman Brandon Baldwin, committed on Monday afternoon. Baldwin attended Southfield A&T in high school before heading to Independence CC, yes that one, this past season.
A member of the class of 2021, the 6-foot-7, 315-pound lineman joins an already impressive class of O-Line recruits in Geno VanDeMark, Ethan Boyd and Kevin Wigenton.
His past season at ICC was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Baldwin is listed as a 3-star recruit according to 247Sports Composite JUCO rankings. Due to him missing the past season, he will still have four years of eligibility upon joining the MSU program.
Baldwin is listed as a offensive tackle on 247Sports website and is ranked No. 4 at his position among JUCO recruits.
His commitment follows up several key ones for first year Head Coach Mel Tucker: Four-star Rayshaun Benny of Oak Park, Michigan, committed to the class of 2021 on Monday, and Kris Phillips, an offensive lineman out of Salem High School in Georgia became the first member of the 2022 class on Sunday.
Baldwin chose MSU over offers from Maryland, Louisville, Liberty, Missouri State, Western Illinois and Eastern Michigan.
Venice, Florida recruit and defensive back chooses MSU
As MSU continues a flurry of commitments from recruits the southern United States, 2021 defensive back Steffan Johnson committed late Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson is a 3-star recruit out of Venice High School in Florida, ranked as the No. 135 cornerback in the country according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
“First I would like to thank my family, my teammates, my coaches, and all of those who have supported me throughout my recruiting journey,” Johnson wrote in a post on Twitter. “I would also like to thank all of the coaches that have recruited me and blessed me with the opportunity to play college football. After taking some time to re-evaluate my commitment and enjoy the recruiting process, I would like to announce that I will be committing to Michigan State University. Go Green.”
Johnson is the second recruit to have committed from Venice this year, the other being Charles Brantley, who plays defensive back. He chose MSU over offers from Coastal Carolina, Rutgers, Marshall and Virginia.
The 6-foot, 160-pound recruit also saw time at quarterback during his last season, as well as playing cornerback.
