As the beginning of the most unique Big Ten college football season gets ready to begin in just over a week, Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. pleaded for responsibility and safety from Michigan State students in an email he sent out Tuesday.
President Stanley pleads for responsibility and safety as football seasons approaches
“During times such as these, it is often the so-called ‘normal’ activities that can help us stay centered and focus,” Stanley said. “I share the excitement of many of you that one of those activities, Spartan football, returns Oct. 24 with a home game vs. Rutgers. However, we must embrace that excitement and the return of Big Ten football responsibly.”
From the beginning, Michigan State has said no fans will be in attendance for any home games at Spartan Stadium, but Stanley says that athletes and staff will be able to receive a “limited” amount of tickets for family and friends.
Tailgating will also not be allowed on campus and all parking lots will be closed and monitored by MSU police and parking officials.
“Instead, we encourage all Spartan fans to watch the upcoming football season from home in a safe manner. Do not gather in crowds or host large watch parties,” Stanley said. “The gathering of fans, indoors or outdoors, only gives the COVID-19 virus the chance to spread.”
Stanley also said that the university will continue to work with the Ingham County Health Department and the City of East Lansing to keep residents safe and enforce guidelines set by both the city and health department.
Michigan State head coaches Mel Tucker and Tom Izzo teamed up for a video to challenge the community to continue to do their part as the COVID-19 pandemic continues on.
“I know many of you are looking forward to the return of Big Ten football, and I have faith that you’ll be responsible on game days to be safe,” Stanley said. “I’d like to thank coaches Tom Izzo and Mel Tucker for making this video to remind us all we are on the same team in beating this pandemic. Like many of you, I will be watching excitedly from home as Coach Tucker begins a new chapter of Spartan football on Oct. 24. Let’s all do our part to ensure we can continue to cheer on the team safely and responsibly.”
As Michigan State looks to battle Rutgers on Oct. 24, there will be another fight outside of Spartan Stadium trying to control the spread of the pandemic.
