Mel Tucker just might’ve stole one.
As of Tuesday night, the Spartans got a verbal commitment from three-star safety and Columbus, Ohio native, AJ Kirk.
“I am beyond blessed to be able to say “ I am committed to Michigan State University”,” Kirk wrote in a post on Instagram that announced his commitment.
A class of 2021 recruit, Kirk chose Michigan State over offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Kentucky.
Kirk, who transferred to Columbus-area powerhouse Archbishop Hoban High School, is the fifth defensive back to commit to the class of 2021. He joins fellow DBs Jah’von Grigsby, Charles Brantley, Michael Gravely Jr. and Antoine Booth.
Kirk is the younger brother of Mike Doss, a former Buckeye and NFL safety. Doss played in nearly 60 games with the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals.
While Doss was still at Ohio State, Tucker served as a defensive backs coach during his final two seasons.
For the Spartans to steal one from the backyard of division foe Ohio State — albeit a three-star is a big step for the new regime in the program to begin competing with the major powers in the FBS.
