There will be no classes on Monday, January 18 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

Last week, President Stanley announced that the  2021 spring break was canceled and that there would be three days throughout the semester for a mid-week break. The additional day was added, making a total of four days with no classes. 

“We are requesting that faculty not assign additional work expectations for the first two break days in March,” Stanley said in the email.

During last week's ASMSU meeting, Provost Teresa Woodruff said that there would be clear communication made to faculty and that the days serve as an academic break for them as well.

Under the new schedule, classes end on Wednesday, April 21. The second two-day break is for students to study for finals which are the following week. 

Although President Stanley added days with no classes, four days off doesn’t equate to having a spring break. The 2020 spring break lasted nine days, if including weekends. 

In the email, Stanley explained that the reason for canceling spring break was to try to prevent people from traveling to reduce the transmission of COVID-19. 

Other universities have also altered their spring 2021 calendar. Ohio State University canceled spring break and will hold the first week of the spring semester online to allow students to quarantine before going back to campus. Purdue University canceled their spring break and will begin classes Tuesday, January 19.
