After a short standoff, a vehicle theft suspect was taken into custody Monday by Ingham County Sheriff's Department with assistance from Michigan State University Police Department, or MSUPD, according to an alert from the sheriff's department.
The sheriff's department deputies responded to a vehicle theft report in Alaiedon Township Monday morning, according to the alert. As deputies were on scene speaking to the victim, the suspect drove by the scene in the stolen car.
According to the alert, the suspect approached the stolen vehicle on a bicycle and stole it while the owner was inside a business on Okemos Road.
The suspect began travelling on westbound I-96, then merged onto U.S. 127 where he caused an accident with a vehicle traveling north on U.S. 127.
"The driver of the vehicle that was struck by the suspect, a 53-year-old Lansing woman and suspect were transported to a local hospital," the alert said.
After causing the accident, the suspect fled on foot. In response, deputies and responding officers, including MSUPD, set a perimeter of the area and conducted a K-9 track.
The suspect, a 32 year-old man from Otsego, Michigan, was located by deputies hiding in a pond near the Dunckel Road exit, according to the alert.
Lansing Police, Lansing Fire Department and Michigan State Police also assisted in taking the suspect into custody, according to the alert.
Ingham County Sheriff's Department could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
