Nearly six weeks before the November election, the East Lansing City Clerk’s office is encouraging East Lansing residents to register to vote and verify their current voter registration ahead of National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 22.

The call to action comes after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson encouraged Michigan citizens to register and vote in a press conference last week.

“It is very important for voters to keep their registration information up to date, including our student population,” East Lansing City Clerk Jennifer Shuster said in a press release. “If you have a Michigan driver’s license or state I.D., now is the time to take five minutes and look your information up online to make sure everything is current and accurate.”

According to Shuster, voter registration information can be updated online through Oct. 19. Voters can update their information at their clerk’s office with proof of residency until the election.

To better serve voters in November, the clerk’s office installed a second teller window at the City Clerk’s office in East Lansing City Hall. A satellite clerk’s office will open on Oct. 5 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), according to the release.

Residents will be able to register to vote and turn in their voted ballots at both office locations. Beginning Sept. 24, residents can vote early at each location, too.

Two new ballot drop box locations have been added for those with absent voter ballots at the MSU-CATA Transportation Center and the East Lansing Department of Public Works. Another ballot drop box can be found in the north lot of city hall, the release said.

For residents voting by mail, the clerk’s office will include prepaid postage return envelopes with absentee ballots. Absent voter ballot applications were sent to all registered voters who had not applied for a November ballot using funds awarded by the Center for Tech and Civic Life.

The City Clerk’s office will also participate in virtual events to spread information on registering to vote and absentee voting options.
