The General Assembly sits at the ASMSU meeting at the International Center on Jan. 30, 2020.
Michigan State will be holding a pilot fall break for undergraduate students in the 2020-21 academic school year, on Oct. 26 and 27.
According to an announcement from MSU Student Affairs and Services, online and in-person 100, 200, 300 and 400 level courses will not be held on these dates.
As for graduate students, their respective colleges will decide whether or not classes will be held.
During this break the university will remain open, and all planned activities will continue.
The University Council will continue to examine the rest of the academic calendar for potential changes aligning with fall break.
MSU Student Affairs and Services credited the recommendations of the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, and the University Council.
MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. has expressed his commitment to a fall break since January, later saying university administration was looking into two dates at the end of October at his 'Ask Stanley' event.
"This news is a testament to the continued efforts and generations of leadership that have been pursuing this for the student body. I am hopeful and excited for the alleviation this will bring to the Spartan community come fall," ASMSU President Mario Kakos stated via text.
ASMSU Vice President for Academic Affairs Brianna Aiello has been involved in the academic calendar committee that has been working on these dates.
In addition to the pilot break the committee is continuing their efforts for a fall break and calendar changes for the 2021-2022 academic year. They have created a proposal for a mid-October fall break, classes off on Election Day, classes off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a week longer of winter break and to make spring break the second week of March instead of the first. The General Assembly supported this proposal on Feb. 27.
