The Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, finalized a MSU fall break proposal at their Feb. 13 meeting.

The Academic Calendar Subcommittee recommended a mid-October fall break, classes off on Election Day, classes off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a week longer of winter break, and to make spring break the second week of March instead of the first, according to Brianna Aiello, ASMSU's vice president for academic affairs.

If approved by MSU administrators, the new calendar would begin in the fall 2021 semester.

MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said he has committed to a pilot program for fall break 2020, however those dates are yet to be determined. The University Council will be meeting on Feb. 25 to deliberate and vote on the potential dates.

“It’s (a proposal) that I strongly support, and I’m going to assume most students would support this, and it’s a lot of what ASMSU’s standing policy has called for,” Aiello said.

ASMSU previously released a statement on their fall break stance, calling for a fall break in addition to classes off on Election Day.

Both semesters have the same amount of instruction days and no changes interfere with orientation, Aiello said.

The University Committee on Undergraduate Education, or UCUE, will have a discussion and have a vote on these academic calendar changes Feb. 20 to send to the University Council.

"If the proposal, the Academic Calendar changes proposal, as a whole passes through the UCUE, I intend to write a resolution to signify ASMSU's support for the proposal in its entirety just to reiterate our stance on everything and that we support it," Aiello said.

The proposal would then be presented to the University Council on March 24, creating heavy discussion amongst the staff, faculty and students, Aiello said.

The final step would require approval from President Stanley and the Board of Trustees.
