19-year-old Michigan State freshman Lyniah Bell was shot and killed while home Dec. 27 in Chicago's Chatham Neighborhood.
Chicago police have one person in custody with pending charges in connection to the shooting and believe the incident was possibly domestic in nature according to NBC Chicago.
Bell was staying the night at her boyfriend's apartment in the South Side neighborhood when the shooting occurred, the station later reported.
Bell was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
She was found in the apartment bedroom after a witness heard a gunshot. Her death is being investigated as a homicide since no weapons were found.
Bell was on a full-ride academic scholarship at MSU and was studying journalism. She graduated from North Lawndale College Prep in 2019. She was a member of the National Honors Society and was identified as a "Peace Warrior" by the charter school.
The school issued a statement on Facebook shortly after the crime.
"To know Lyniah was to love her," the schools statement says. "A Peace Warrior and National Honors Society inductee, her extracurriculars included Theatre club, Hoops High, and CAPS (student instructor program). We just can't say enough good about the positive impact she had on the school community. She will be missed dearly, and our hearts grieve alongside her mother and family."
