Newly elected East Lansing Mayor Ruth Beier at the East Lansing City Council meeting Nov. 12, 2019.

Ruth Beier was unanimously voted mayor by the East Lansing City Council at Tuesday's council meeting.

Beier was elected to the council in 2013 and reelected in 2017.

Aaron Stephens, who was elected to council while he was a Michigan State student in 2017, was unanimously voted mayor pro tem by the council.

Beier, Stephens and Meadows are joined on the council by newcomers Jessy Gregg and Lisa Babcock, who were runaway winners at the Nov. 5 election.

At the meeting, Beier said she would spend the next two years as mayor and then retire from city work, meaning she will not run for re-election when her term expires in 2021.

Beier takes over as mayor for Mark Meadows, who was reelected in the Nov. 5 election and will now serve as a councilmember. Meadows told The State News he would endorse Beier as mayor shortly after he was reelected.
