Michigan State University’s College of Education has been ranked number one in the world for education by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, which was released in August 2019.

MSU received a total score of 277 points in the Social Science-Education category, outperforming Harvard University and the University of Michigan, with 266.5 and 255 points, respectively. MSU ranked number four with 244.3 points in 2018 and number 9 with 264.4 points in 2017.

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy is an independent higher education research organization that ranks 1,800 universities around the world based on the institutions’ academic papers, their impact and their awards.

“These rankings are based largely on how frequently other scholars are seeing our faculty’s work in leading research journals, and using that work in their own publications,” Robert Floden, dean of the MSU College of Education, said in a press release. “The high rankings demonstrate the impact we are having on the growth of knowledge about how to address key problems in education.”

In addition their number one ranking, MSU was ranked number 12 in the 2020 World University Ranking by the Times Higher Education. MSU is also known for ranking number one for elementary and secondary teacher education by U.S. News & World Report for 25 years.
