Michigan State seals it first win since September, against Rutgers. The Spartans' determination for bowl eligibility took over, and they overcame the Scarlet Knights 27-0.

The Spartans got off to a slow start as they were unable to connect on passes, but senior quarterback Brian Lewerke was able to find junior wide receiver Cody White. White tied his career high of nine receptions at the end of the first half. The junior ended the game with three touchdowns, the most he’s had in a single game. He snagged 11 receptions for 136 yards.

The Spartans started the season with the Big Ten’s leading wide receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. as a weapon on offense. Halfway through the season Stewart injured his leg. Cody White along with sophomore wide receiver C.J. Hayes and freshman wide receiver Tre Mosley have been able to shine.

Redshirt freshman running back Elijah Collins fed off the chemistry between Lewerke and White. Though young, Collins has been a huge part of this Spartan offense. Collins finished the game with 109 rushing yards. This was his third game this season with over 100 rushing yards.

On the other end of the field, the Spartan defense was electric. The Scarlet Knights couldn’t get a first down until the third quarter.

Even without Joe Bachie, the defensive line stayed solid and applied pressure to Rutgers' quarter back Johnny Langan. The Spartans held the Scarlet Knights to 140 total yards.

Although history repeated itself and MSU took a hit from penalties with four for 40 yards, the offense was able to make up for yards lost.

Lewerke ended the game with 21 completed passes for 30 attempts. He threw for 239 yards.

The offense stepped up, and did not step off the pedal. It’s as if they only had two more games left in the season.

The Spartans look to achieve their goal of 2-0 as they head back home for senior day to face Maryland. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
