Don’t fret if you still need to registered to vote; that’s what same-day registration is for!

Twenty one states and the District of Colombia enacted same-day registration, meaning any qualified resident of these states can register to vote and cast a ballot all in the same day, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, or NCSL.

All you need for same-day registration are these two items:

1. Proof of your residency, which can be sufficed by a current driver’s license, a paycheck or a utility bill.
2. A photo ID, while not necessary, speeds up the process. If you do not have one you will have to sign an affidavit, confirming identity is required when registering.

Since 2018, in the state of Michigan, same day registration can be done at the city or town clerk’s office wherever the voter resides. This takes place in an early voting period through Election Day.

An individual who applies to register to vote during this period must provide proof of the residency in the city or township to vote a regular ballot. If an individual cannot provide proof of residency, then the ballot is considered a provisional ballot and will be counted unless determined otherwise.
