MSUPD releases name and more details regarding on-campus death

October 10, 2019

MSUPD has released the name of the visiting student who died on Sept. 28 on Michigan State's campus during Homecoming weekend.

Alaina Grace Hopkinson was a 17-year-old freshman at Grand Valley State University and was visiting friends at MSU.

According to MSUPD, Hopkinson was found unresponsive on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. and did not appear to be breathing after taking a nap.

MSUPD Capt. Doug Monette said Hopkinson was found in a residence hall.

Emergency personnel transported her from the residence hall to Sparrow Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Hopkinson had a previous medical condition, but her exact cause of death has yet to be determined, an MSUPD press release said. An autopsy has been ordered and toxicology results will take several weeks to be completed.

Monette said the toxicology results will be reported to the prosecutor's office.

MSUPD will continue conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.

"Out of respect for the student's family and their privacy, MSU is not releasing more details," the press release said.
