The Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, will place several changes to existing routes as the fall semester begins at Michigan State while transit service workers rally in Lansing for improved conditions and wages.

Increased service frequency happens alongside employees, customers and allies rallying for increased benefits and improved services for disabled riders.

Workers rallied at the August 26 Lansing City Council meeting to demand that Transdev, a private contractor assisting CATA with paratransit customers, improve conditions and wages for its workers, according to WILX.

Workers also testified before a CATA board meeting, marched on Transdev's Lansing operations and attended previous meetings to raise their concerns.

The new fall CATA schedule should be unaffected by the rally and will proceed as scheduled.

Campus CATA routes 30 to 39 are still free for MSU students, continuing a policy that began in 2018. Off-campus buses cost 60 cents with a student ID, or students can purchase a semester bus pass.

Below is a list of the route changes:

  • Route 1, Downtown Lansing/Meridian Mall, will have slight adjustments during MSU breaks and holidays.
  • Route 3, Willow/Lansing Mall, will increase service frequency with three additional Saturday morning trips that provide 30-minute service throughout the day instead of 60-minute service.
  • Route 7, Aurelius/Miller, will see some buses departing five to 10 minutes later than normal.
  • Route 8, Pennsylvania/Holt, will see service frequency increased from every 45 minutes to every 30 minutes.
  • Route 9, South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Miller, has added weekend trips and will increase frequency of service from every 45 minutes to every 30 minutes.
  • Route 12, West Michigan/LCC West/Waverly, will have service to Lansing Community College's west campus resume. The route increased frequency on August 26 to accommodate the college's schedule.
  • Route 20, South Harrison/Jolly/Dunckel, will keep the same year-round schedule but continue service into Spartan Village during MSU breaks and holidays.
  • Route 24, East Lansing/ East Lake Lansing Road, will run weekday trips every 35 minutes until 6:30 p.m.
During MSU breaks, the 7 a.m. weekday trip from the Lake Lansing Meijer will depart 10 minutes later.
  • Route 32, commuter lot/Snyder Hall/clinical center, will extend to Snyder Hall after buses depart from MSU Auditorium every 10 minutes.
  • Route 33, North and South neighborhoods, will run buses run every 40 minutes after 7 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
  • Route 38, Spartan Village, will have buses operating every 30 minutes until 10:45 p.m. and will travel from Harrison Road to Shaw Lane.
  • The Lot Link will now service Spartan Village Monday through Friday 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. upon request, but a cash payment or bus pass will be required.
  • Routes 20, 22, and 23 will return to boarding passengers at the Shaw and Farm boarding site on August 26 to allow campus buses to return to service.
