A U.S. Senate subcommittee investigation report obtained by NBC found that Michigan State University, along with the FBI, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee, failed to protect young gymnasts from Larry Nassar's abuse.
NBC said they obtained a report that outlines an 18-month investigation by members of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Manufacturing, Trade and Consumer Protection, which reviewed thousands of documents and interviews with athletes, survivors and Olympic officials.
Ex-President Lou Anna K. Simon retired from her tenured faculty position the same day this report was released.
The report is followed by proposed legislation to improve oversight and prevent future abuse, according to the Washington Post.
The legislation calls for increased governance changes for Olympians including increasing legal liability for incidents of sexual abuse by coaches and employees and increasing the share of athlete voices on the Olympic committee’s board from one-fifth to one-third.
