Created in 2018, Michigan State's Prevention, Outreach and Education (POE) Department recently released its first annual report showcasing its 10 initiatives. Overall, POE provided education and training to over 72,000 people in the MSU community, according to the report.
“This team is extremely passionate about the work that they do, and it shows in their consistent efforts,” Robert Kent, the associate vice president leading MSU’s Office for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance, said in a university press release. “I am proud of the massive impact they have made at this university in such a short amount of time.”
POE's programs include sexual assault and relationship violence prevention, a bystander network, online prevention education, their "Greek Takes the Lead" program, "It's On Us" Week of Action, prevention programming for the Athletic Department, faculty/staff outreach and education, graduate/professional student outreach and education and campus climate and response programming.
The Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Prevention Program is mandatory for all first year students. Its purpose is to educate first year students about sexual assault and the resources available for survivors.
The program had a 95% completion rate, the report said.
The Bystander Network Program is mandatory for all second year students. The program encourages students to be an active bystander.
According to the annual report, the Bystander Network Program had a 94% completion rate.
Online Prevention Education is required for all faculty, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students who are in their third year or above. Graduate students had a 95% completion rate and undergraduate students had a 97% completion rate.
"Greek Takes the Lead" is designed to encourage leadership, intervention and dialogue within fraternities and sororities, according to the release. All general members of a fraternity or a sorority are required to attend one of eight sessions offered.
"The Myth of the Grey Area: Consent for Sorority Women" had the highest attendance rate of the sessions.
"It's On Us" is a campaign dedicated to ending sexual assault on campus. The fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters both had an "It's On Us" Week of Action with different events, including special speakers, yoga, therapy dogs and more.
Athletic Department Programming requires student athletes to attend three sessions of training. Athletic Department staff members received training about policies, how to report, resources and how to support survivors of sexual assault.
The faculty/staff programming is a mandatory online training that also includes several other workshops, including the Transformative Teaching Workshop and the Creating Change through Collaboration Summit Workshop.
The Graduate/Professional Student program educated 1,200 students in 13 sessions on policies and how to report, according to the report.
This year, POE hired a climate and response specialist that oversees climate and response projects that are each unique.
POE noted in the report that the first year has been "exciting and successful."
