Following a series win over Indiana State last weekend, Michigan State baseball (8-21, 0-5 Big Ten) began a four-game road trip before returning to East Lansing for a nine-game home stand.
The road stint began in South Bend, as the Spartans defeated Notre Dame (12-18, 7-8 ACC), 3-2 in a single game of interconference play Tuesday.
While the Irish have now lost three straight games, MSU came in having taken two of its last three against an Indiana State club with only four losses before traveling to East Lansing.
With the Spartans being down 2-1 in the 7th inning, freshman outfielder Zaid Walker doubled down the line to nod the score at two, scoring the go-ahead run on a throwing error.
MSU coach Jake Boss did not understate the importance of each victory at this stretch in the season.
“They’re all big at this point,” Boss said. “We play a good Notre Dame team who's capable of beating anybody. They beat Florida State in a very good league for sure.”
This was a big one indeed as it came against a Notre Dame team that has beaten the likes of a 19-13 Florida State club in March.
The road trip ensues to Piscataway, New Jersey, as the Spartans travel to a struggling Rutgers (10-19, 2-4 Big Ten) for a three-game series beginning on April 12.
“Hopefully (we can) keep some momentum going at the plate, especially, and then it's conference weekend and we go out to Rutgers,” Boss said. “We need to continue to carry the momentum forward and get ourselves back into the thick of things for the Big Ten tournament.”
