A former judge, once appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals by then-Gov. John Engler, was hired by Michigan State to help comply with federal changes to Title IX regulations.

Michael Talbot, who retired as chief judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals last year, was hired in February to serve as a “Title IX hearing officer” on an interim basis, the Lansing State Journal reports. MSU is updating its Title IX procedures in response to proposed changes to federal law which require the cross-examination of alleged victims of sexual assault.

MSU spokesperson Emily Guerrant declined to tell LSJ if Engler played a role in hiring Talbot.

Talbot’s experience in sexual assault cases extends to charing an independent panel that reviews external investigations of sexual assault complaints within the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Editor's note: This article was updated to correctly reflect that changes to Title IX are proposed.
