Actuarial Science junior Parker Haire was found dead near the Sebewaing River Point on Jan. 2 following his disappearance on New Year's Day.
Haire was last heard from at about 7:21 a.m. New Year's Day in a 911 call, according to The Detroit Free Press. After he told dispatchers he was lost and needed help, the call was disconnected.
His body was found in waist-deep water the next day after police traced his phone to a location near the river. The authorities also located Haire's body two miles away from his Jeep.
Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson spoke to The Detroit Free Press about the case. He said several factors, including disorientation from hypothermia, could have led Haire to travel that way. Hanson estimated he "continued nearly 100 yards until he got next to a phragmites patch where the ice thinned enough not to support him."
The medical examiner completed an autopsy on Thursday. Hanson said the full autopsy results are not currently available, and that the medical examiner's office will later release.
