Farmers' markets are not always just open for the warmer seasons. The Meridian Township Farmers' Market will open its winter market tomorrow, Dec. 1 at Meridian Mall in Okemos.

The indoor market will be open on the first and third Saturdays of each month until April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be 25 to 30 vendors located in the J.C. Penney corridor.

Vendors will sell fresh produce, baked goods and crafts. Available, pre-made food will consist of burritos, pastries, pies, cookies and more.

4:14 “It's a great way to support local businesses and get the freshest produce,” market manager Corey Patrick said.

Patrick said the market will be adding children's activities this year. Crafts will change depending on the weekly theme, such as decorating ornaments for Christmas or football-related crafts the week of the Super Bowl.

Another addition to the market is its acceptance of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which provide nutrition assistance for low-income individuals and families. Double Up Food Bucks, a program that expands the benefits of SNAP and food stamps will also be implemented.

Patrick said SNAP users can use their Michigan Bridge Card to receive credit or tokens to use to purchase food at the market. The Michigan Farmers Market Association will match dollar-for-dollar up to $20 for fresh fruits and vegetables.
