Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has won the Michigan gubernatorial race over Republican Bill Schuette, as called by the Associated Press. She had won 1,632,217 votes statewide with 65 percent of precincts reporting, as of 12:22 a.m. Bill Schuette received 1,333,947 votes as of the same time. Whitmer picked up 65,654 votes in Ingham County, with 98.35 percent of precincts reporting.
On the campaign trail, Whitmer said her priorities if elected include fixing roads, ensuring the cleanliness of Michigan's drinking water, improving education and skill training, fighting urban poverty, repealing the retirement tax and confronting the opioid crisis.
