MSU medical resident Michael Phinn was arrested on 10 charges, including:

  • one count criminal sexual conduct, first degree;
  • three counts criminal sexual conduct, second degree;
  • two counts gross indecency; and
  • four counts aggravated indecent exposure.

Phinn, 32, was serving his post-graduate residency through the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, but according to the Lansing State Journal he is now suspended from clinical duties. There will also be a Title IX investigation into any sexual misconduct.

Authorities have confirmed reports of sexual assault at the MSU Clinical Center come from non-patients, MSU spokesperson Emily Guerrant said in a press release.

"The university has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct and violence, and it is important that anyone feel comfortable coming forward with concerns," Guerrant said. "We will use all available resources to investigate the situation and support those involved."

The College of Osteopathic Medicine has been under scrutiny recently as former dean of the college William Strampel faces his own charges of sexual assault and harassment. Strampel was the boss of ex-MSU doctor Larry Nassar, who is serving a 60-year federal sentence on child pornography charges.

There have been over 400 individuals who have come forward as survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of Nassar. Strampel faces two counts of willful neglect of duty in his role as dean.

In a press release, the Michigan State University Police Department (MSUPD) said those who have information about Phinn or were victims are encouraged to contact MSUPD on their toll-free tip line at: 844-99-MSUPD.
