At least three cases of mumps confirmed at University of Michigan

October 19, 2018

Three cases of the mumps virus have been confirmed at the University of Michigan within the past two weeks, according to a press release from University Physician & Executive Director of Student Health and Wellness at MSU David Weismantel.

With the upcoming U-M vs. MSU football game this weekend, the university is encouraging students to check their immunization record.

If you have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, you should consult with your health care provider on whether or not to receive the vaccine, the press release said.

Weismantel said the virus can be transmitted through bodily fluids such as saliva. The virus can also be contracted by coming in contact with an infected person via a sneeze or a cough.

He said those who are sick to stay home to prevent infecting others.
