Vibrant tees, shiny hangers and deep discounts attract third year graduate student Nicki Parrott to Moosejaw’s storefront at 555 East Grand River Avenue. Thursday began East Lansing’s annual sidewalk sale which continues through Sunday.

At least 18 stores and businesses will participate in Downtown East Lansing’s 2018 Sidewalk Sales, which will take place Sept. 13 through 16.

Community Development and Engagement Manager Amy Schlusler-Schmitt said the city hopes to see "a great mix" of community members participate in the event.

“The sales themselves have been going on for over a decade,” Schlusler-Schmitt said. “However, for around the last three years, the city of East Lansing has moved them to September, to allow more participation from the MSU community.”

The sales are geared towards members of the local community and visitors alike. Each of the participating businesses will offer either a deal on goods or a free item. Hours will vary by business.

“Normally, our tune-ups cost $69, but we’re offering a $10 discount,” said Trek Vandecar, owner of The Bike Shop. “We’ve participated in the last two or three sales, and we change our deal every year to see what students are interested in.”

Aside from The Bike Shop, 17 other businesses throughout downtown are confirmed to be participating in the sales, including Mackerel Sky Gallery of Contemporary Craft, Hollow Mountain Comics and Games and Unicha Tea and Ice Cream.

The city of East Lansing encouraged attendees to shop and dine locally and visit local attractions. Some businesses will give away limited numbers of parking vouchers to paying customers, according to a press release from the city.

Additional information, including a partial list of special deals from the participating businesses, can be found here.
