After nearly 45 years of service, the MSU Union Post Office is closing on Dec. 14 2018, as "expenses have far exceeded the income over the past six years."

Following nearly 45 years of service, the MSU Union's post office is closing after examination of finances and regular usage, according to a press release.

The post office will be closing on Dec. 14, 2018 after it was decided the location's "expenses have far exceeded the income over the past six years," the press release said.

The Union is searching for "mail service alternatives" that students can rely on following the closing.

"The MSU Union is thankful for everyone’s patronage to the MSU Union’s post office over the years," the press release said.

Roger Kochenderfer, a retired postal worker and an employee at the MSU Union's post office, said students will now have to go to a regular post office if they need postal services.

"We're the only contract station on campus," Kochenderfer said. "The East Lansing post office is like eight tenths of a mile north of here up Abbot Road.”

Kochenderfer said he and the other post office employees were told the location was not turning a profit and that “it was a money issue.”

There are three retired postal workers and a few students who work at the post office in the Union, according to Kochenderfer.

He said he's been at the MSU Union Post Office since 2016 and would rather not see it close.

"I'd just go back to being a retired postal worker unless something else falls into my lap, but it's not up to me," Kochenderfer said.

There are post offices on Abbot Road and on Collins Road, Kochenderfer said. There is also a post office off of Okemos Road by the Meridian Mall.

"It's a lot farther for people who live on the north side of campus and work on the north side of campus," he said. "It's (the Union) a lot more convenient."

Delivery services including FedEx and UPS have locations near campus and many local businesses sell postage stamps, the press release said.

University Stores, and some residence halls and apartment complexes, offer mailing services.
