The Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, had their first committee meetings of the 2018-19 academic year on Thursday, Sept. 13, where the group talked about voter registration, the presidential search process and more.
New committee chairs
During ASMSU's first General Assembly meeting of the semester, ASMSU held elections for the committee chairs and vice chairs.
There are chairs for each facet of ASMSU, which includes finance, policy and academics.
The new chairpersons are Chair Maysa Sitar and Vice Chair Sergei Kelley; Chair Isaiah Hawkins and Vice Chair Ben Horne; Chair Harrison Greenleaf and Vice Chair Colin Wiebrecht.
ASMSU partners with CMU for voter registration
With the midterm elections approaching, one of ASMSU’s initiatives for the year is to get as many students registered to vote as possible.
During the home game against Central Michigan University, ASMSU is partnering with CMU’s student government to help register students to vote.
They will be stationed outside Spartan Stadium for most the day until right before the game.
Presidential search committee input sessions
ASMSU president Katherine “Cookie” Rifiotis is the only representative from the undergraduate student body on the board for the search for a new university president.
The committee has decided on various input sessions from different communities on campus.
Each of the colleges within MSU with have their own session, but some will also be combined.
Rifiotis said she suggested a student-specific input session so there would not be an odd power dynamic having the professors be there while they talk.
Informal meeting held after academic policy
At the end of the Committee Meeting, ASMSU called for an informal meeting regarding the lawsuit filed against MSU and others alleging that ex-MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar raped a student athlete in 1992 and Trustee George Perles, athletic director at the time, interfered in an investigation into the abuse.
Rifiotis took questions from different committee members during the meeting to relay back to other board members.
The committee did not call for any immediate action to be taken.
“I don't know if they (calls for Perles' resignation) are inappropriate so much as they're hasty," Rifiotis said. “They're hasty because, if you don't have the full scope of the problem, how can you have the best attack?”
