Ariel Robbins, assistant program director and academic advisor for the MSU Charles Drew Science Scholars program, is the recipient of the 2018 Outstanding Established Advisor Award.
Recipients must display remarkable abilities in valuable academic and career advising while having worked in their field for over three years, a university press release said.
Jerry Cadwell, director of the Charles Drew Science Scholars program, said he nominated Robbins for the advising award.
“Student after student talked about the importance of what Ms. Robbins does in terms of their success as students and their well being," Cadwell said. "I think that she is more than deserving."
Named after Dr. Charles R. Drew, the Charles Drew Science Scholars program allows his legacy to live on through the coming generations of scientists and mathematicians.
Drew was a renowned black physician and researcher. His influential work and studies on the conservation of blood plasma was crucial to aiding WWII victims and also revolutionized blood banking.
The program focuses on successful, historically underrepresented undergraduate students on the pursuit of obtaining degrees in science and mathematics.
The Drew Scholars program is a “comprehensive support program."
“The full scope of the program is the advising, the academic support, the community of learners, and career experience and preparation," he said.
The program is intended to enhance the college experience of those involved, and personalized advising is provided to each student.
"I really love my job. I love working with the students that I work with," Robbins said.
Robbins said she was excited and surprised when she found out she received the award.
“After I got the award Dr. Caldwell let me see the students who supported my nomination and it just made me feel really good and fulfilled," she said. "It made me really feel that I make a difference and have an impact on students."
