After last season, fans and media expected sophomore cornerback Josiah Scott and junior cornerback Justin Layne to repeat the No Fly Zone created by cornerbacks Trae Waynes and Darqueze Dennard.
But everybody will have to wait, as head coach Mark Dantonio announced on MSU’s media day Monday Scott will be out for “probably” two months or less due to a non-contact injury.
“Josiah had a situation, so he’s out for probably two months,” Dantonio said. “We’ve got guys that can play.”
Scott would’ve been out for the first half of MSU’s Aug. 31 matchup against Utah State, because of a targeting call during the Spartans’ 45-17 Holiday Bowl win over Washington State.
“You fell for Josiah, first and foremost,” defensive backs and special teams coach Paul Haynes said. “We already had to have a plan anyways to get some other guys ready to roll. We always have to try three to five guys ready.
"Anytime a guy gets hurt, you feel for the guy, but it’s always next man up."
Dantonio said he’s been impressed with junior cornerback Josh Butler, along with freshman cornerback Kalon Gervin, sophomore safety Tre Person and redshirt freshman cornerback Shakur Brown. The 12-year Spartan head coach said he also likes freshman defensive backs Davion Williams and Chris Jackson.
“We’ll be all right,” Dantonio said.
Dantonio also said senior defensive end Dillon Alexander will be out indefinitely due to a non-contact foot situation. No timetable has been set for Alexander.
