Nakia Barr will be the new secretary of the MSU Board of Trustees, replacing recently appointed Athletic Director Bill Beekman, according to a university press release.

Barr will be replacing Beekman, previous secretary of the board who was appointed as MSU's athletic director on July 16.

Barr will immediately assume the role as secretary and will have her appointment finalized at the Aug. 31 board meeting, Interim President John Engler said in the press release.

Barr has been in the MSU Office of General Counsel since 2014, where she has had experience in governance and governmental relations, according to the release. She is also an adjunct professor in the College of Law.

"She has impeccable credentials with a no-nonsense approach to issues," Engler said in the release. "She has been a valuable legal resource during this transition and I'm pleased she is stepping forward into a more formal role."

Barr's duties as secretary of the board will include administrative responsibilities for the board meetings, university ordinances and more, the media release said.

"I am excited to fill this key role and serve the university in this new capacity," Barr said in the release. "I look forward to working closely with the President's Office and Board of Trustees to accomplish their goals."
