The state of Michigan’s primary elections will take place on Tuesday, Aug 7.

This election will determine who will represent political parties in the November election for positions like governor, U.S. Senate member and state Senate member, as well as many positions in local government.

Democratic candidates for governor include state Senate member Gretchen Whitmer, former Executive Director for the Detroit Health Department Abdul El-Sayed and entrepreneur Shri Thanedar. Republican candidates for governor include Dr. Jim Hines, a physician, Lt. Governor of Michigan Brian Calley, state Senate member Patrick Colbeck and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette

One seat in the U.S. Senate from the state of Michigan is currently up for grabs, as incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow’s seat will be challenged by Republicans John James and Sandy Pensler.

As it stands in the U.S. House of Representatives, nine of the 14 seats from the state of Michigan are held by Republicans, while four are held by Democrats. The seat for the 13th district is currently vacant.

The city of East Lansing falls in Michigan’s eighth district, which is currently held by Republican Mike Bishop. Bishop’s seat will be challenged by Democrats Elissa Slotkin and Chris Smith, Republican Lokesh Kumar, and Libertarian Brian Ellison

Polling locations can be found at the city of East Lansing's website, and voters can see which poll they are required to vote at by going to the voter information center page of the state of Michigan website.
