One series of events that is catered towards children in the Lansing area is the Play in the Park series, with an event taking place at Valley Court Park every Tuesday throughout the month of July.

City Councilmember Ruth Beier said events like Play in the Park help to appeal to a broad audience that includes kids.

“We like to do things for kids, we like the aquatic center, the soccer complex and the play in the park is just another example of that,” Beier said.

The recurring event features weekly guests including MSU Football’s Zeke the Wonderdog on July 31. Zeke is known for catching frisbees on the field at Spartan Stadium during MSU home football games.

East Lansing Environmental Stewardship Coordinator Heather Surface said Zeke won't be alone, bringing some other dog pals.

Surface pointed out that this event can offer parents the opportunity to give their children a fun experience without having to worry about cost or the safety of their kids.

“This kind of event, yes the kids have fun, but I think it’s more for the parents,” Surface said. “You can have a good time and know your kid is safe, and your kid can have a good time and feel safe also.”

East Lansing city councilmember Shanna Draheim said that the Play in the Park series provides, “great community building.”

“I think it’s a great way for neighbors and young kids to have a safe welcoming place to get together and see some local artists, so I think it’s great,” Draheim said.

Although this event series is primarily for kids, Beier said that Zeke’s performance could attract MSU students and alumni, as well.

“Zeke the Wonderdog has been around since I’ve been paying attention to Michigan State,” Beier said. “It’s going to be a great event for everybody, I’ll probably go myself.”
