Christopher Richert to be new general manager of The State News

July 11, 2018

Christopher Richert will be The State News' new general manager, The State News Board of Directors announced in a press release on Tuesday. He will be replacing Marty Sturgeon, who is retiring in December.

Richert, who was previously the general manager of the Columbia Chronicle, will begin working on Aug. 1, 2018 as The State News' sixth general manager, the press release said.

Richert earned a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in non-profit administrative organizational management from the University of Phoenix's Chicago campus and a Bachelor of Arts degree in television producing and directing from Columbia College Chicago.

He was most recently general manager of the Columbia Chronicle and Echo Magazine at Columbia College Chicago. He was also president of the College Media Business & Advertising Managers, or CMBAM.

"I have been an advocate for student media for most of my professional career and I'm excited to bring that experience to one of the nation's premier student media organizations," Richert said in the press release.

Sturgeon has been general manager at The State News since 2001 and will be officially retiring in December of 2018.

"Marty has been an extraordinary general manager, ensuring the financial strength and editorial independence of The State News for nearly two decades," Perry Parks, president of The State News Board of Directors said in the release. "We had many excellent applicants, and the board is very pleased we were able to find someone with the experience and commitment of Chris Richert. We are confident Chris will help this historic community resource grow and thrive in our challenging digital era."
