In order to show support for the second amendment and create an open discussion on gun policy, the Second Amendment March is being held at the Lansing State Capitol lawn tomorrow.
By featuring speakers like gubernatorial candidates Brian Calley and Patrick Colbeck, hosting vendors and providing musical entertainment by the band Madison Rising, the event has a full schedule.
President of the Second Amendment March Terri Stocke said the event is being held to remind the public and legislators that there is an alternative viewpoint to the anti-gun rhetoric and that second amendment rights are near and dear to many Michiganders.
“All of this political rhetoric that we’re hearing and all of this anti-gun speech that we’re hearing is not the viewpoint of the mass majority of Americans,” Stocke said. “I think that it’s not just Michigan, I think that every state needs to be vigilant about their gun laws and as an entire nation we need to collectively come together as gun owners and just be vigilant and let our legislators know that the second amendment right is very clear. The right shall no be infringed.”
Stocke said projected attendance on Facebook is at a record high for the event, with nearly 2,000 individuals planning on attending. She said, though in the past the event has attracted protesters, it is a family-friendly event where participants are encouraged to engage in civil discourse.
Hosted by organizations like Michigan Open Carry and Michigan Gun Owners, the event includes an attorneys panel where attendees can ask questions about gun laws and pending court cases.
"This is just sort of a general event to keep the second amendment at the forefront of peoples’ minds," Stocke said. “It’s really just a nice event to get second amendment supporters together.”
The event is being held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
