Five easy Super Bowl party food recipes

February 1, 2018

The NFL’s 2017-18 football season will draw to its conclusion Feb. 4., when millions of football fans tune in to watch Super Bowl 52. The championship game will see the Philadelphia Eagles face off against the New England Patriots at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis at 6:30 p.m.

For those who will be hosting Super Bowl watch parties, making food for a group of guests can be time-consuming. Here are five appetizer ideas from The State News to help you plan your Super Bowl festivities.

Guacamole

It’s a staple to have guacamole and tortilla chips at a Super Bowl watch party.

Ingredients you’ll need:

3 avocados

½ cup diced tomatoes

½ cup chopped onion

1 tablespoon lime juice

Pinch of kosher salt

For this recipe, mash three avocados (using a fork or potato masher) with a tablespoon of lime juice and a pinch of salt in a bowl.

Add in a half-cup of diced tomatoes and a half-cup of chopped onion.

Mix thoroughly, then serve with tortilla chips.

Soft pretzel bites

An appetizer that takes less than ten minutes to make.

Ingredients you’ll need:

2 boxes of frozen, bite-size soft pretzels (with included salt packets)

Melted butter

Condiments of your choice (such as cream cheese)

Buy packages of frozen, bite-sized pretzels that you’d normally heat up in a microwave. These can be found in the frozen foods section of a grocery store or supermarket.

Bake the pretzels according the instructions on the box.

For flavor, brush melted butter over the pretzel bites while they’re hot. Sprinkle them with the included pretzel salt.

Serve with cream cheese, nacho cheese, mustard or whatever condiment is preferred.

Beef queso dip

If you have a crockpot on hand, you can easily make queso dip for your party.

Ingredients you’ll need:

1 ½ of processed block cheese (such as Velveeta)

1 can of tomatoes with green chilies

½ diced onion

1 pound of browned ground beef

Cube a pound and a half of processed block cheese.

Melt the cubes in a crockpot that’s set on HIGH.

Once the cheese is melted, add the can of tomatoes with green chilies, half a diced onion and one pound of browned beef that’s been drained of its grease to the crockpot.

Stir, and once the ingredients are fully combined, turn the crockpot to LOW.

Serve the dip with tortilla chips or crackers.

Pigs in a blanket

Requiring only crescent roll dough, hot dogs and an oven, pigs in a blanket are simple to make.

Ingredients you’ll need:

1 package of hot dogs

1 can of refrigerated crescent dough

Cut the hot dogs into quarters.

Cut triangles from the crescent dough.

Roll a piece of hot dog in a piece of dough, making sure to pinch the dough securely around the hot dog piece. Repeat until you've used all of your ingredients.

Place the hot dogs on a baking sheet, pinched end down. Bake them at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Once done, insert a toothpick into each for easy handling.

Slow-cooker barbecue smokies

This recipe requires only two ingredients.

Ingredients you’ll need:

2 packages of beef cocktail wieners

1 18-ounce bottle of barbecue sauce

Combine two packages of beef cocktail wieners with one 18-ounce bottle of barbecue sauce in a crockpot.

Put the lid on the crockpot and cook the sausages for one hour on HIGH, or until they are hot.

Alternatively, for a faster version, cook the cocktail wieners and barbecue sauce in a pan on the stovetop for 10 minutes.
