Six volleyball players are being sent to Colorado Springs, Colorado to attend the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts from March 2-4.
Two Michiganians, freshman Meredith Norris and sophomore Samantha McLean, are among those who have been invited. In addition, McLean and Norris will be joined by sophomore Maggie Midgette and freshmen Jamye Cox, Alyssa Chronowski and Julia Hatcher.
Cox and McLean, both defensive specialists, are two experienced members of the team and appeared in more than 70 sets last season. Norris and Chronowski played sparingly as freshman outside hitters. Hatcher, a middle blocker, and Midgette, a setter, have both made several appearances on the court during their young careers.
McLean was also a part of a crash in mid-November 2017 with field hockey freshman Mairi Fletcher. The two were on a moped and were struck by a pickup truck. McLean did not play for the rest of the season after the incident.
The tryouts will be available for streaming on the USA Volleyball website. At the conclusion of Saturday’s events, USAVB coach Karch Kiraly will select between 16 and 18 collegiate players to train with the full national team. Then, the collegiate national teams will be announced by the end of March.
