“Still hard to believe, it just doesn't feel real, but I know one thing … no matter what he made sure my brothers & I were taken care of,” Butler tweeted Sunday. “Sacrificed so much and taught us everything we need to know. I'm going to continue to make you happy dad. I love you RIP DAD see you in heaven.”

Butler’s father did not have insurance, which left Butler and his family in charge of paying any funeral expenses from their own wallets. 

On Monday, Butler created a GoFundMe page to collect money to help relieve the financial burden of funeral costs.

“So the situation is that my dad didn't have insurance and the funeral will be 5,000 by Friday,” Butler wrote in the page’s description. “If anyone could please help make a donation so we can give my dad the proper way to go out. Please spread the word. ANYTHING helps. Cash app, Mail, Venmo.”

Butler would soon be left in awe as his initial goal of $5,000 was easily met. As of Tuesday afternoon, Butler’s page has raised over $9,000.

With his father's funeral occurring around the same time as MSU's matchup against Ohio State this weekend,  Dantonio said on Tuesday that Butler will miss Saturday's road game.

“Josh is hanging in there,” Dantonio said. “I talked with him (Tuesday) morning. He's coming back today, this evening, and then he'll be here for a couple days to get things squared away, and then he'll go back down. The funeral is on Saturday, so he'll miss the game.
