Equifax experienced a data breach that lasted from mid-May through July 2017, according to the Federal Trade Commission's website. Hackers were able to access names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver’s license numbers.

MSU has a partnership with The Work Number, a service of Equifax Workforce Solutions, where MSU employees are required to input their social security number along with other employer information.

MSU spokesperson Jason Cody said there was no breach of MSU employee information.

“Once the breach became known, we obviously reached out to Equifax and have been working with them,” he said. “Their cyber security incident involved a consumer database. We work with Equifax through their workforce solutions."

He went on to explain that the two databases are completely separate and there was no overlap of information.
