MSU renames study abroad office to Office for Education Abroad

April 5, 2017

MSU's Office of Study Abroad officially changed its name — the office will now be known as the Office for Education Abroad. The name change is part of the office's effort to display the diversity in the available program options.

Associate Director of Education Abroad and Exchanges Inge Steglitz said the name change will better reflect the range of international learning opportunities for students. These opportunities include study abroad, undergraduate research abroad, global service-learning and international internships.

"In addition, our new name signals our strategic focus on the continued diversification of education abroad offerings that will expand where, when, and how students learn abroad," Steglitz said via email.

Although the name change went into effect April 1, the website has not yet been updated.

The office's functions will not change, just its name. According to the office's website, almost 3,000 students utilize its programs each year. The office sends students to more than 60 countries and administers more than 275 programs.

Steglitz said, "If anything, the name change is catching up with recent developments and will give direction to our collaborations with MSU’s 17 colleges and other academic and non-academic units on campus."
